Jason Limón. Illustrator.

jason limon

Jason Limón is an award winning artist from San Antonio, Texas. After developing his art with the click of the mouse, he decided to turn old school; using brushes instead. The result are warm and retro, just the type that I would love to get one for my new house. Thank you Jason so answering the questions.

Q. Your artwork has a distinctive retro feel to it. How do you describe your style?
A. I feel my work is changing on a daily basis. I continue to try to push all sorts of new characters and ideas out. I guess what gives my work a retro feel is the distressed, textured background and my color choices (which are changing a bit as well). I’ve been making it a point to throw in a splash of brighter colors here and there. I do have an extensive background in graphic design so typography is an element that always finds its way into my pieces.

Q. Where did you get your inspiration from?
A. Inspiration comes from all directions, from events in my life, music, television, just watching the world. Once in a great while the image might come from a dream, but often I wake up forgetting what I’ve dreamt about.

Q. Can you tell us a bit about your background? Did you have any formal art training?
A. I do have a formal education in fine art, but most of my training came in the form of my profession of twelve years as a graphic designer. I grew up drawing a lot. It was my, and still is, my most favorite thing to do. As a designer I explored the digital world as much as possible. I did do some illustration work in digital format later in my career. I eventually began to feel restricted by what the computer can do (although others can create miracles with it) and I really missed using my bare hands to create art. After twelve years of designing it was time for me to jump off the computer and back into painting the good ol’ fashioned way.

Q. Who or what are your biggest inspiration?
A. Most inspiration comes from every day life events - the experiences I go through as a husband, father and human being. I do get quite a bit of inspiration from other artists that I’ve begun talking to over the years. Support from them and watching the things they do helps me in many ways.

Q. Can you tell us about your website, Lemon Art. Why do you choose that name?
A. It’s actually Limón-Art. It has no other real meaning than being my last name, which is Limón. My work has nothing to do with the fruit, although I do use the Lemon shape as my identity.

Q. So far, how many exhibitions or shows that you have participated in?
A. Thus far I’ve been fortunate to be involved in a good amount of exhibits/shows. As of now I’ve been able to display/sell in Chicago, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Miami, England, Germany and Sweden. I’ve done some themed events, which are always fun. Gallery 1988 in LA puts on great ones. I have a show in San Francisco, Baltimore and Escondido coming up later this year.

Q. Who are some of the people that you would love to collaborate with?
A. I do enjoy collabs. Currently I have one going on with Colin Johnson (colinjohnsonillustration.com). I hope to do a few with Dan May (dan-may.com) coming up soon. I have many favorite artists and it would be great to someday work with each and every on that would like to.

Q. One of my favourite cartoonist is Chris Ware. For some unknown reason your work reminds me of his. But of course, your medium and approach is very different. Do you know Chris and what do you think of his artworks?
A. That’s the first time any one has said to have seen Chris Ware in my work. I don’t know Chris Ware personally, but I really do like everything he does. I have a few of his graphic novels and have gotta say I enjoy looking through them over and over.

Q. Have you been to any country in Asia?
A. I have never been to Asia, though it is a region I would love to explore. The farthest I’ve been would be Italy, France and Switzerland.

Q. Apart from art, what are your other interest?
A. Hanging out with my wife and kids, sitting around under the trees at the park, eating snow cones, watching movies, being outside (in the fall & winter), being inside (in the long, extra-hot Texas summers), collecting old useless objects, killing time on the internet.

Q. Any last words?
A. Yeah, see me at Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/limon-art/) and Myspace (http://www.myspace.com/jasonlimon)… I need friends!!
