The Team Colours

the team colours

The Team Colours is a group of designers united by one common interest; colours. They come from different places all around the world. Each member has an impressive portfolio and their works have been featured in many major international design magazine and websites. Their website, together with online store and blog was launched few weeks ago. I managed to get in touch with them and find out what The Team Colours is all about.

Q. I was told you guys come from different places around the world. How did you guys meet?
A. The Team Colours is managed by Fi O’Brien, Ben the Illustrator’s wife. Fi manages the Speakerdog Paper Toys project, and from this discovered the rest of the team members. Fi worked with each of the artists while they were creating their own Speakerdog Paper Toy. We noticed that there was a certain group of artists doing Speakerdogs that all shared a love of colour, and so we formed The Team Colours!

Q. What are you guys been up to?
A. Our big launch was just a couple of weeks ago, with the website, shop and blog. We also have our first proper team project, which is a set of awesome prints we created, one by each of the six artists, on the theme of ‘team’. Apart from that, everyone is super busy getting on with their own projects. We’re currently planning our next team project, but we’re keeping it very hush-hush for now!

Q. Who came with the idea to start The Team Colours? Care to share with us your history?
A. Oops! Think we already answered that one a bit in question 1!

Q. Are all of you guys involved in the art & design industry? Can you give a brief introduction of each members of The Team Colours?
A. Yep! Everyone works as a designer or illustrator full-time. Fi comes from Melbourne , Australia, but she and Ben now live in Cornwall, in the United Kingdom. Fi’s worked successfully in advertising and also owned her own cafe/gallery, which supported local artists and musicians. Fi now runs the Speakerdog Paper Toys, takes care of all the Speakerdog products and Ben’s prints AND manages the business-side of Ben the Illustrator. Fi thinks green grocers are the most colourful places on earth.

Ben grew up in the United Kingdom and lived in London for a decade until last year. He studied animation and went on to animate and direct music videos before leaving animation behind to focus on his illustration work. Ben spends his time creating beautiful and colourful landscapes for editorial and advertising clients. Ben is a sucker for the smiley face symbol.

Drunk Park grew up in Tasmania, Australia, and now lives in London. He produces a great wealth of amazing design and illustration work, often featuring his trademark super fresh blue characters! His work has appeared in Sneaker Freaker, IdN and the Design Is Kinky book ‘Semi Permanent’. Drunk Park is heavily inspired by Mr. Squiggle .

Emily Glaubinger hails from Philly but now lives in San Francisco. Emily produces killer posters for fresh bands like Architecture in Helsinki and Ladybirds. Emily also works full-time for the super Gama-Go Company . Emily has a 78 Motobecane moped.

Another California resident is Lorin Brown, a student extraordinaire at CalArts. Lorin has produced work for Arkitip, Beautiful Decay and UARM.Lorin thinks water is nice.

Meni Tzima, from Athens Greece , is renowned for her character illustration which she creates for pretty much any media, including work for Computer Arts Projects, MTV and Pictoplasma. Her closet is the most colourful place she knows.

Finally, Project Detonate, based in New Haven and the creator of a great bunch of fresh characters. Project Detonate has created CD sleeves, posters and apparel and has been featured in Varla Magazine and Alternative Press Magazine. When he was 13 his favorite thing was his Super Nintendo!

Q. What or who are your influences? What are the websites that you usually visit for inspirations?
A. Being a mixed bunch, we have thousands of influences coming together, here we go… Dali, MIST, Angry Woebots,Yoshitomo Nara, Catalina Estrada, Martha Cooper, Bill Dunster, Paul Arden, Arne Jacobsen, Brian Cook, Takeshi Murakami, Keith Haring, Matt Sewell, Harvey Ball, Gary Larson, John Kricfalusi, Roger Hargreaves, Osvaldo Cavandoli, Mr.Squiggle, Carrie Collins, Seripop, Richard Coleman, Maya Hayuk, Matt Furie, Mark Rothko, Kevin Lyons, Terry Richardson, Richard Avedon, Jean Michel Basquiat, Junko Mizuno, The Furi Furi Company, Disney, Tezuka Osamu and Sam Gibbons.

Q. Does Team Color have any distinctive, unique style?
A. Yes! We always use colour, and lots of it!

Q. What do you think about the art scene at your place?
A. It’s colourful! It’s always bubbling and fresh. There’s so much talent out there, if it’s colourful we want it!

Q. What do you think the most important point or tips that often forgotten or overlook by designers?
A. You have to be yourself, create what you enjoy creating.

Q. Do you think designers need to have basic knowledge in fine art?
A. Not necessarily, but fine art can be super inspiring and incredibly interesting when you get into it.

Q. Have any of you guys done exhibition or collaboration with other designers/brand?
A. Since we came together through collaborating with each other, we have to say a huge YES! We’ll be collaborating together on a whole bunch of things in the future too, Ben the Illustrator and Project Detonate have recently created artwork for a print together, it’s ace!

Q. You have quite an extensive line of product at your online shop. What are some of the crowd favorite?
A. The badges are always popular! We have two special colour sets, one for ‘CMYK’ and one for ‘RGB’, they’re essential for anybody who’s serious about design!

Q. Any last words?
A. Just one four-letter-word… CMYK!Website: http://theteamcolours.com
