Yuta Onoda. Painter & Illustrator

Yuta Onoda is a painter and illustrator from Japan and has recently graduated from Bachelor of Applied Arts Illustration at Sheridan College, Canada. His manga-style characters and dreamy expression is undoubtedly Asian and adorably charming. He has been shaping his art aesthetic through various forms of media, finding new avenues to express himself. Thank you to Mr. Yuta for answering my questions.
Q. Do you have a process flow when producing an artwork?
A. I normally spend a lot of time on researching and sketching when I start working on a project. And then I move onto the final.

Q. To date, what is the toughest assignment that you have done so far?
A. I think every assignment I have done was tough but the toughest assignment I have done so far is the piece for the 10th Annual imagineNATIVE Film Festival. It was very hard to come up with the concept and turn the ideas into the image. The schedule was very tight, so I was scared if I could deliver the final on time. I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to work on this project though!
Q. Is there any Asian or Japanese elements that you have (concious or unconciously) blended in your artwork that shows you are from Japan?
A. I think a lot of my works have liner elements because I grew up with reading a lot of comics when I was a child. It’s an unconscious part but I think this part kind of shows that I am from Japan (Asia).

Q. What attracted you to water color (actually Acrylics)? How do you describe your style?
A. I love working with acrylics because it dries faster. I would like to start using oil paints when I get a chance though.
I love to create dreamy images that almost tell you a story.

Q. Who are your favorite artists?
A. There are too many talented artists out there…I cannot really tell who are my favorite artists.
I appreciate looking at all the images that other artists have created.

Q.What are the thing that you would never leave home without?
A. Definitely my sketchbook. Sometimes ideas just pop up in my mind when I am outside and it’s really helpful to write ideas in my sketchbook.
Q. what do you think are the most important things one should have to become a successful artist?
A. It’s really hard to say because I just graduated from school and started my career, but one thing I know for sure is to work hardest.
I think making a lot of efforts is one of the most important things to improve your art skills. Nothing will get better unless you try hard enough.

Q. What are your future plans and projects?
A. I hope to keep creating both illustrations and paintings for the rest of my life! I am currently working on
some illustration projects and I hope to keep coming up with pieces I am happy with!
